I am interested in using phytolith systematics to reconstruct past terrestrial ecosystems. A detailed and reliable record of past climatic fluctuations increases the possibility of identifying causes and mechanisms of climatic variation. Such information can be extracted from areas where evidence of natural systems in the past still exists, by way of phytoliths. The nature and distribution of phytoliths can offer valuable environmental information about past ecosystems, including human ecosystems, or even about cultural practices. My work focuses on the relationship between the environment and phytolith distribution and their ecological application.
